My husband got an email from someone who works at Miva asking him to update his information. Great idea to have an updated and clean list for email marketing and general marketing campaigns, but what went wrong here?
1. This person included 1200 email addresses in the "TO" field using a personal email client. This means that all 1200 recipients can see all 1200 email addresses.
2. He did not include a subject line.
3. Want a snowball effect? Someone replied to ALL with her updated information! 1200 email addresses is a nice little spam list of advertising executives to have.
There are a few things you can do instead of what this person did. You can use an Email Service Provider and include a link for them to click on sending them to a page where you include an opt in form for them to enter their information. You can also ask them to reply with their information using an ESP as well. A side benefit of doing it this way is if anyone wants to unsubscribe they can do so in an automated fashion. Another way you can do this is to use the "BCC" so that the list of email addresses is hidden.
Here's to a clean and updated New Year!
