It all started with a single, innocent email marketing campaign. I'm on a "women in business" list. The company that owns this list doesn't use an ESP and uses one single email address that everyone is a member of. We'll call it "office@thiscompany.com". This morning a member sent in a request to this particular address to have their image removed from their site. You can't imagine what happened next.
I got 100 emails in 5 hours from different people replying to the email saying "I got this, why?", "Me too", "Take me off this list", "Why am I getting these". These unsuspecting members had no idea what they were doing until they got their own email into their inbox. It is still painfully going, all day long. Some chimed in and explained the reason being that we are all a part of this email address, but it didn't seem to matter, they are still pouring in.
I have a feeling a majority of this list unsubscribed due to the fact that they don't blind cc this address, or blind cc each individual on the list. Alternatively they could be using an ESP, where there can be no replies to all. I get the emails they send and they do a great job of offering up information in their email marketing newsletter, but I fear today they lost out on many of their subscribers.
Just a rant from SOMA.
